The excitement and pageantry of international Tall Ships came to the
Port of Los Angeles for four days of maritime festivities under the banner
of TallShips LA!
The gathering of local, regional and international tall ships drew thousands
to the San Pedro waterfront as part of the American Sail Training Association’s
Tall Ships Challenge® 2005. In 2002, the first Tall Ships Challenge®
in the Pacific brought over 250,000 visitors to the San Pedro waterfront
making it the single largest spectator event in the ports history.
Tall
Ships Challenge®
The 2005 Tall Ships Challenge® started in Victoria, British Columbia
in June. The fleet of ships raced down the Pacific West Coast making
port stops in various cities on their way to Los Angeles. At midday
on August 11, the fleet launched TallShipsLA! with a grand parade of
sail down the Port of Los Angeles’ main channel.
