What are the dates for the TallShips®LA event?

What is a tall ship?
A "tall ship" is any sailing vessel that provides sail training and participates in events such as the tall ship races. Tall Ships is a registered trademark of the American Sail Training Association.

Is TallShips®LA associated with ASTA’s Tall Ship Challenge®?
Yes, The Port of Los Angeles is the sixth port of call in the American Sail Training Association’s Pacific Coast 2005 Tall Ships Challenge® Series that originated in Vancouver B.C., and will conclude in San Diego later this month. The Port of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Maritime Institute are co-hosting this event.

What types of vessels will be participating?
TallShips®LA will host Class A and Class B tall ships of various vessel types such as brigantines, brig, ketch, topsail schooners, cutters and a naval barque.

How many ships will be at the event?
Fifteen tall ships are scheduled to participate over the four-day event. Tall ships making an appearance include the Argus, Bill of Rights, Californian, Mexican Naval vessel Cuauhtémoc, Exy Johnson, Antigua’s Kaisei, Lynx, R. Tucker Thompson of New Zealand, Pilgrim, Robert C. Seamans, Royaliste, Spirit of Dana Point, Swift of Ipswich, Talofa and Tole Mour. (More)

When are the tall ships scheduled to arrive?
The tall ships will sail into the Main Channel at the Port of Los Angeles on Thursday, August 11, at 11:00 a.m. for the Grand Parade of Sail. Vessels will be docked along the waterfront.

What other activities are planned?
In addition to the free dockside tours and ticketed Day Sail adventures, the family can enjoy nautical-themed activities, games and entertainment on-site.

How much will the event cost?
The event is free. Day Sail adventure tickets will be available for those who are interested in sailing aboard one of the tall ships. Tickets are $40 for adults and $25 for children 12 and under.

How do I get to the Port of Los Angeles?
(Thomas Guide 2005, page 284) We’re at the foot of the 110 Freeway and Harbor Boulevard exit. Follow the signs to the ships.

Where can I park? How much will it cost?
Free parking is available at a variety of locations: Ports O’ Call Village, 22nd Street and Miner, 22nd and Signal Street; and 1st Street and Harbor Boulevard. Shuttle buses will be provided from the parking lots to and from event locations. Shuttles will run until 7:00 p.m. Visitors may also ride the Red Cars free of charge.

Can visitors board the vessels?
Yes, free public viewing and dockside tours of select vessels is available at 3:00 p.m. and purchased day sail adventures on selected ships at 4:00 p.m.

Do the vessels get any of the generated proceeds?
Yes, Day Sail adventure ticket proceeds go directly to the hosting tall ship. Day Sail adventure ticket can be purchased on line at www.TallShipsLA.com. One dollar from every Random Lengths program sold will be donated to the Los Angeles Maritime Institute’s restoration of the Swift of Ipswich.

Is it too late to volunteer?
